John Butler Selected as the Chief of Police, Uniformed Police Branch at the United States Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C.

John F. Butler was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and began his career in law enforcement with the United States Border Patrol in 1988. While working the night shift Butler attended college during the day and completed an Associates degree in Criminal Justice. During his tenure with the Border Patrol, Butler has served in a variety of assignments that include Field Training Officer, Tactical Operations, Transportation Officer, Fitness Coordinator, Emergency Medical Technician, and shift supervisor.

He later joined the  Pentagon Police Department (PPD). While at PPD Butler quickly advanced through the ranks from patrol officer, to S.W.A.T Operator with the Special Operations Division, Sergeant, Lieutenant and finally as a Special Agent with the Antiterrorism directorate.   Butler has made considerable contributions to police operations. In addition to developing and implementing new programs, as a police lieutenant, he has helped transition the department to an outcome based management system designed to maximize usage of police resources.

Chief Butler is a graduate of the Joint Counterintelligence Training Academy (JCITA) and several Federal Law Enforcement Training Center advanced training courses to include; Defensive Tactics, Use, of Force, Law Enforcement Leadership, Counter terrorism, Physical Security and Counter Surveillance. Chief Butler is currently a candidate for the FBI National Academy.  

“As the Chief, I view myself as the head coach,” said Chief Butler. He added, “my initial plan is to meet with the men and women of the department as well as with managers from other departments both internal and external to the GPO to begin my transition. “One of my primary responsibilities is to manage our resources to accomplish the operational and organizational mission set forth by the Public Printer.”
